Mystery in the Mountains Program Recalls 1916 Circus Death

On Saturday, August 28, from 7-9 p.m., the Southwest Virginia Museum will host “Mystery in the Mountains,” an exciting, interactive program for guests 16 and older.  The event has participants looking for clues throughout the museum to solve a mystery based on a real-life regional event.  This year, the mystery centers on “Murderous Mary,” the elephant hung for murder in the Clinchfield Railroad Yard just outside Erwin, TN.

In September of 1916, the Sparks World Famous Shows rode through Southwest Virginia and Northeastern Tennessee with a spectacular show that featured clowns, acrobats, and a variety of animals, including Mary, the elephant billed as “the largest living land animal on Earth.”  Mary was three inches taller than the renowned “Jumbo” of the Barnum & Bailey Circus and weighed in at a whopping five tons.  She was the centerpiece of the circus’ animal act.

When the show made its scheduled stop in St. Paul, Virginia on September 11, Walter “Red” Eldridge, a drifter who had taken work in St. Paul, decided to join up with the Sparks crew and signed on as an elephant handler.  Twenty-four hours later, Eldridge was dead, killed by Mary herself.  What caused the elephant to turn on Red?  Was she the killer or merely a weapon?  Did someone have reason to want Eldridge dead, or was he a victim of circumstance?

These questions will be answered in the “Mystery in the Mountains” program.  Participants in the program will be assigned characters to portray for the evening.  They will receive a character description and other information prior to the event.  Guests are encouraged to come dressed in a costume appropriate to their character.  Hors d’oeuvres will be served at the start of the program and then the sleuthing begins.  The scene will be set with evidence presented by “Victoria Ayers,” Rufus’ wife, and then the hunt is on to find the clues and be the first to solve the mystery.  Clues will be hidden throughout the four floors of the museum.  Participants should be advised that the museum does not have an elevator and this program requires multiple trips up and down several flights of stairs.  Proper footwear is encouraged.
The cost for the program is $10.00 per person.  The program is limited to 25 participants, so be sure to register soon.  The deadline for registration and payment is Saturday, July 31.  For more information or to register for the program, please call the museum at 276-523-1322.

Radio Royalties Bill HR 848! Have you heard about this?

A bill has been introduced in Congress that would keep your favorite radio station from playing the music you love! It’s true! You see, most of the record labels are now owned by foreign companies and they’re demanding that Congress pass new laws requiring radio stations to pay them millions of dollars a year or…quit playing music! We think they’re looking for a big bail out at radio’s expense. Music stations like 98.5 WTFM would have to turn to talk, news or sports to try to make a living. You would have to find another way to hear your favorite music without having to pay for it yourself. This is just not right.

Since the very beginning… American record companies and artists have encouraged radio stations to play their songs. That relationship has been a big factor in the careers of artists like John Mellencamp, Rod Stewart, Kelly Clarkson, and scores of others who have openly thanked radio for getting their music to you.

Now, a Radio Royalties Bill...H.R. 848 has been introduced in Congress. Please, help us stop this bill by calling your Congressman or Congresswoman and telling them to oppose the radio royalties bill. You’ll find the contact info you need below.

Thank you for your help!
